In business or any area of your life that you are working hard at something, sometimes it’s just hard to stay motivated. We all have those days we say to ourselves “Is this even worth it?” “I’m so tired.” “I don’t know if I can do it.”
I’m here to tell you that these feeling are completely natural and yes, you can do it! Sometimes we just need a moment. It’s okay to take that moment!
We can’t be on 100% of the time. We need a day to stop. Reflect. Re-charge. Re-evaluate. This is a good thing! It allows you to see where you are at and how far you’ve come. I have found that in these moments of despair, I tend to end up with the most clarity.
Over the last year, I have developed a system for when these feelings begin to creep up. It really works and helps me to quickly refocus, and realize it’s okay to feel these feelings, deal with them, and then move forward. Here are some of the steps I take, and I hope you try them too.
Feel the feeling. Whether it’s happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, let it be what it is. I feel every feeling you have, is a justified feeling. It’s important that we allow ourselves to be human. We often tend to be very hard on ourselves for feeling a certain way. There is no wrong way to feel. Yes, we all over react, and we all under react, but regardless, if you allow yourself to feel the emotion, then you can begin to heal from it. It’s when we try to stifle these feelings that they become this ball of energy that begins to spin out of control.
Work out. Yup! As cliché as this may sound, a good workout gets me thinking more clearly. Every. Single. Time.
Listen. I go to YouTube or different websites of people that truly motivate and inspire me. For me it’s Gabby Bernstein, Jim Rohn, Les Walker, Tony Robbins, Marie Forleo….this list goes on and on. I find that listening to motivational speakers really helps me to refocus and get my mojo back on track. I don’t just listen. I take notes. I write down quotes, or advice they are giving. I have a notebook just for these quotes and mantras. I carry it with me and reference it often.
Network. Going to networking meetings is a great way to meet new people. Hear their story, and get some really solid advice. Everyone has a story and from their experience, some truly great advice is born.
Read. Get out of the house. Go to a park, a book store or a library (yes they still have those!) and sit in quiet, grab a great book and read. It can be a motivational book. A book about your craft. Or just a trashy romance novel. The reason I say go to a place to read is because it gets you out of your own environment. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to help us renew ourselves and recharge a little.
Write down goals. This is a great one! Write down 3 – 5 goals at the beginning of every week. Accomplishing these goals by week’s end will give you a great sense of empowerment. These goals can be large or small. One of mine is to actually fold the laundry as soon as it’s done. Sounds strange right? Believe it or not, I feel accomplished when I do this because my days get crazy, and I can’t tell you how many times I have 3 baskets of clean laundry sitting, waiting to be folded (I’m sure my husband and kids could tell you though!)
Whether you try these steps above, or have your own system, stay true to following it. Having a system of any kind, really will help you to refocus and get you back on track. Always remember, it’s okay to fall off track once in a while. The important thing is to get up, dust yourself off, and get back out there!
